My Expertise

Before opening my own office, I was a manager for multiple offices and taught tax classes for over 16 years.  I taught both in class and virtually on basic and advanced tax topics, so I have a great deal of tax knowledge.

Tax Updates for 2025

Please reach us at olsonld@bellsouth.net if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Whatever the taxpayer has reported in box 7 of their W2, or any tips they report on form 4137 will be excluded from their taxable income. This phases out at an income of $150,000 for individual filers and $300,000 for Married Filing Jointly. It is not available for those who file Married Filing Separately.

This applies to the “half” portion of time and a half. If you make $10 an hour, and you work 3 hours of overtime and you make $15 and hour, that would be a total of $45. However, you only had the “half” of 3 hours X the 5 “half hours” so it would exclude $15. The limit of the exclusion is $12,500 per person, or $25,000 if filing Married Filing Jointly. Maximum Income of $150,000 or $300,000 if Married Filing Jointly. No deduction if you are filing Married Filing Separately.

Seniors who have reached the age of 65 by the end of 2025 can exclude up to $6,000 (or $12,000 if Married Filing Jointly) from their Social Security Income. This phases out at an income of $75,000 for individual taxpayers and $150,000 for Married Filing Jointly. There is no deduction for those using the Married filing Separately Status.

Car Loans originated after December 31, 2024 that were purchased new. Must be secured by a lien on the vehicle for personal use only. The car had to be assembled in the United States. You must provided the Vin number of the car on the return. You can deduct all interest that you have paid on the loan.
